IL Conformista (1970)
directed by Bernardo Bertolucci
Recently saw this movie for the second time. The main character Marcello Clerici is a fascist assassin that must murder the love of his life and his mentor the old professor.
The cinematography is done by favourite cinematographer Vittorio Storaro. The colour palettes are rich throughout.
In the final scene he creates the perfect image of hell with fiery reds and ominous casting shadows that envelop the main character. A self inflicted hell that Storaro captures externally.
The concept of confirming repeats throughout this film. Doing his duty with out thinking about his own sense of self. Putting the society and the concept of duties on a pedestal. The fact remains that society does change and what is the style today maybe not be tomorrow. He believes in the fascist cause at first but when he starts to question it he can not see that it will change. He has to act on their principles because he can not see a non- fascist Italy ever existing.
This is story is about the danger of losing your self to the will of others.
The forest assassination scene is blood curdling. For me it is about the trees. There are so many trees but no shelter. Ana runs and screams for her life but there is no where to hide just a forest filled with naked trees. The camera movement and the trees make it hard to tell where you are and you feel like Ana disoriented and terrified.

ReplyDeleteOne of my favorites! We watch the movie about three years ago,for me was second time, but always the FIRST.Bertolucci bypasses the borders of human conditioning in a tempo alto movement, but your conclusion IS all that the film is about'This is a story of losing your self to the will of others'Your statement IS insight.
