To * By Mikhail Lermontov 1832

Farewell! We are parting forever,
With nothing to soften the pain,
The bonds of your heart will sever,
But will not be happy again.
Farewell! And I know you will cherish
And will not forget to the end
The name of the man who will perish,
The name of your lover and friend.

So often the meaning of speeches
Is hidden and foolishly mocked,
But the souls that it timidly reaches
Preserve it in secrecy locked.
These speeches conceal at the bottom
The past irretrievably drowned;
The two of us never forgot them,
And others are deaf to the sound.

Together we spent by a minute,
A moment of heavenly bliss,
But I lived through eternity in it
and burned in a passionate kiss.
Farewell! -it is useless lamenting
That love is so brittle and fleet.
The parting was hard and tormenting-
It would be much harder to meet!

True. This why you hold a special place in the Russian side of my heart.
