I had a meeting with my prof to discuss my research paper on Machiavelli.
Sometimes I wonder if I am really a history student because I can never answer the following the questions:
- What field of European History is your speciality?
- What do you believe is the beginning of history ?
- What type of approach would you like to take on your research paper? Social history? biographical? humanist? socio political? Military ?
With that said or not said we still talked about Machiavelli for half an hour. I listened mostly.
Professor " Now some of the ideas Mach. suggests are very cruel in nature. for example he believed in order to keep the republic healthy it was okay if not encouraged to execute people on a fairly regular basis. Executing innocence people was okay."
Me: Laughing hysterically
Prof: " I am serious Kim. He was at times not a very nice man. He was a fascist. Mussolini read him."
Me: " In my readings I read that there was a humorous side to Machiavelli that most people dont get right away. So his writings are ironic or purposely controversial to draw attention to draw awareness to the tyranny of the time."
Prof: " Yes historians have said that about some of his writings but not this one. He really honestly believed in execution for the sake of civic order."
Me: Still smiling " oh I see"
So my professor thinks I am a sociopath which should grant me a better grade in the class right?
My future paper title : Some professors need to be executed from time to time: a dive into Machiavellian thought by Kim
Good idea right ?
