Today I visited my 92 year old aunt. A strong, brave woman with a penchant for writing. She has single handed collected, complied and wrote a book on the family lineage. She has also travelled world and married an eccentric farmer my great uncle Harry ( who lived to be 98 and even to that age managed to scare bulls with his voice, he also got his pilots licence in his 60's among other crazy adventures).

While the cousins and my parents were talking amongst themselves ,my great Aunt took my hand and with great sincereity and empathy she said " You are making the right decisions, you are living life right. You are doing good job, you really are and dont forget it." This struck a nerve with me because up till this point I had not realized how badly I had needed to hear this. A hole in me filled and this relief brought me to tears.

From someone who has seen much. From an elder , a person of real experience. Someone has seen the birth of many children and the death of many friends and family. A person who has witnessed the basics of nature from harvest to harvest in varying weather and conditions both physically, emotionally and spiritually. The words from my sage were genuine and she knew what I needed to hear, I felt a reverberation in my soul.

My grandmother when she was alive had told me when she was a young woman she had three choices:
1. Homemaker ( which was the one society approved of the most )
2. Nurse
3. Teacher. The option she chose. I recently found out that if you chose teacher you had to be single. You were not allowed as a woman to be both a teacher and married. Their reasoning was that they didn't want to "lose" a teacher to pregnancy but we know better now what the real reasons were.
She told me I had some many options and that I should really take advantage of that. She told to be do something that made me happy, that I had an obligation to seize this opportunity to the fullest for all the women how came before me who didn't have these choices.

This conversation has been ingrained in me. We only had two very meaningful conversations that I can remember this one and the other being when I told my grandma I was going to marry for money. She stopped the car in the middle of an intersection and looked me dead in the eye and in a very stern and authoritarian voice she said " You will marry for love and for no other reason."

I am not sure if my clever, beautiful female friends have felt a pull in their lives to settle for a certain kind of "traditional" relationship or life path. But I felt that pressure recently and have been scoured. Because I want to marry for love and nothing else but I don't want compromise my opportunities in the process. I want to use my gifts and skills to the fullest, I want to pursue them to there very edge, there very threshold. Even in our age this is not going to be the same for me as it will a man. There are still preconceptions about what I have to give up, about some crazy rightful sacrifice I have to make. But I am going to battle to this to the bitter end.

Please do not think that I think all men are trying to put the shackles of patriarchy on my ankles and wrists. Because this is not true. I know some great men such as my father, my friend J and my best friends significant others who are in full support of equality, who I believe would do battle side by side with us.

At the end of the visit my great aunt hugged me and said " Have a great life."

This morning I realized it looks like I might have bought a nurse's uniform. Which I am equally happy with because perpetually wearing a costume is something I enjoy thoroughly as well.

Normally I am not a huge fan of Vice. I feel there do's and don't to be very pretentious and offensive. However, I have been watching there travel videos lately and I quite enjoy them.

The Balkan music I enjoy is known as Balkan Beats or Balkan Hotstep. I imagined that all the clubs in eastern Europe played only this great dance music/mash up with crazy saxophone, accordion and women wailing in unison.

I was wrong.

My close Croatian friend informed me that only hipsters in Paris, London, Toronto and New York listen to,enjoy, promote and create this genre.

Any plant I put by my bedside starting growing at an accelerated rate.

I wonder why that is ?

Before my little tree was 4 inches now it has a grown a foot at least in two months.

Last week I moved my chocolate mint plant by my bedside. It had two dieing old branches with a grand total of four leaves. Now in the last week it has seven new baby shoots. And somehow these other baby plants have appeared in its pot not sure what they are, maybe weeds? maybe other herbs?

Technically Mint is a weed, a delicious weed.

Is it my love/presence ? Is it that my bedroom window gets the best light ? Is my room the perfect temperature? What could it be ?

If I know Fritzy I believe he is not into the mere physical reality but the inner psychological world of his characters.

I think it sounds more like a pounding headache or the beating of a panicked heart.

Currently I am watching Wit (2001) . Which is a very upsetting movie almost as upsetting as the novella it is based on loosley, Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilyich (1886). It is 10pm here but lets be honest with this daylight saving stuff I feel it is 1am. I am crying because the main character played maginificently by Emma Thompson is having a whole" I regret all the mistakes in my life" moment.
Nothing could make me more upset but then watching someone have regrets. Regret is the worst. Because it is just heart wrenchingly painful, it is a realization that what is done can not be undone. Time is a theif ! A dirty sleezy thief ! It takes and does not give back!

Just be clear, the constant quoting of John Donne's poetry by Emma Thompson makes this film good. However the camera movement, lighting and general mis-en-scene is average. It has the ususal end of life movie gimmicks flashbacks and it is trying to be all Brechtian breaking the fourth wall. But it is worth watching.

I wanted to call someone ( I am using gmail as phone, Thank you Google). But Who? Who will I call ? I need someone to make me stop sobbing ? Someone needs to say something resassuring!

Best friend: In the East of the second largest country in the world. Also don't know phone number. Furthermore, May be sleeping, something about time difference.

Highlights of the night:
-Great Friends, Great Music, Great Dancing. The party train that was halloween went on till 6am (granted the only members dedicated to that level of party are Ry and Kim).
-A girl dressed up as Rock Lobster came over and screamed " Vampirella That is a wicked costume" then hugged me then picked me up.
- A guy dressed as a devil said " Vampira" I said close "Vampirella" Then he " Holy shit thats what I meant, Ugh the alcohol I totally know the difference between Vampira and Vampirella I can believe it came out so wrong. Ugh What a giant mistake, I read the comic books seriously please believe me. I am never going to stop beating myself over this."
-Random Babe asking if I would take a photo with her. People watch the internets I may appear sooner rather than later in other forum but still as vampirella.
- Ry telling my multiple times that if I ever wanted to dye my hair black he would support it. Then later progressing too, Seriously You look hot with Black hair.

Lowlights:
-WHEN MY VAMPIRE STUDIES TEACHER WHO WAS ALIVE IN THE SIXITIES THOUGHT I WAS WONDER WOMAN. PHD in Vampire does not make you expert, Sad.
-All night people thought I was wonderwoman. When I was Shera Princess of power everyone also thought I was wonderwoman. -What is that ? A girl in a red is always Wonderwoman ? That's what that article should have said instead "slutty Vampire" it is in fact "Yea Wonder woman, Awesome "

If you read their reviews, all the female costumes are in their words " slutty" HOWEVER if you read the male costume reviews they say " if you feel you can pull off then do it." Hmm double standard much?

You know what else UGO. Female comic characters tend to be over sexualized because they are drawn by geeky men who try to create a perfect female character which is part of their imagination/fantasy. Male characters are also heavy on the body because it is who these geeky artists want to be when they look at themselves in the mirror. And when we read and enjoy comic books we live vicariously through this imaginary. We know its not real life that's what makes it comic book art.

The Fiberglass Plan

Sail Boat is still anchored and awaiting fiberglassing.

For a long time we were missing this one piece of equipment, a bizzarre metal roller with ridges designed specifically for fiberglassing boats.
The plan as highlighted by the local expert “Vargas Dan” who has fiberglassed many a boat is as follows :
A) We will measure, pre cut and pre-fit the roll of fiberglass matt.
B) We will mix only tiny amounts of liquid un waxed fiberglass with the hardener in small yogurt containers. Apparently once you have mixed the fiberglass resin and hardening agent you only have minutes to get it on the matt before it sets. We did a test a run and we now have a fiberglass hockey puck that formed at the bottom of a yogurt container.
C) Mix a tiny amount of fiberglass solution, pour on then smoothen on with special metal roller.

Special Clause: You need 2-4 days of straight sun and you can only directly apply the fiberglass solution between 11am-3pm due to the moisture in the air. In the early morning and late afternoon there is too much moisture in the air. Moisture creatures bubbles in the fiberglass. You need the days off sun to make sure the fiberglass is fully set.

Sea Legs

In order to get this roller we had to go to Port Alberni. Ry and I took that as a perfect opportunity to get me my sea legs. I have been cruising around with the guys for some time now but never in real open ocean. We took Ry’s 14 foot hursten V haul for a crazy ride.
We took to the ocean at 7 am with 6 jerry cans filled with marine gas and enough food for an emergency cove/bay camping trip. Also we had life jackets, VHF radio and Ry’s Cell. Since the trip we have further accumulated an air horn and flare gun.

Apparently I was happy go lucky until we passed Cox Bay and it occurred to me we were in full open ocean. By the time Long beach came around I was gripping the boat. My right hand covered in blisters from my death grip. The swell was in the 5-7 ft range with rogues at 10 feet. My mind played tricks on me, being a surfer the only time I stare at swell is to figure out when it is going to break. While staring at the swell my mind kept telling me it was going to break on us which was not true.
I was glad when we hit Ucluelet and demanded Ry take me for a neighborhood walk as for some reason along the way I thought I might never get to appreciate the mundane things in life again. We filled the tank with Gas at Eagle Marine were a giant sealion came right up to the boat and as I took a photo smiled at the camera. Maybe he learnt this tactic would get him treats from tourists ? We had no treats, we used him for a photo.

After filling up our tank we headed through the broken island group. We stopped for a beach comb on Turtle Island. A huge airforce plane came plowing down on our sky line.. It was flying so low I was sure it was going to crash. Ry said it was the Hercules C1 or something like that.( Vero or Ry feel free to correct me on what it is called) It was massive and clipped the tree tops. Apparently the air force likes to use this area to do drills. Probably because of the low air traffic ? We had a well deserved beach nap and set off for the Alberni Canal. Apparently the canal is big enough to fit an air- craft carrier.

The second we hit Port Alberni the warm valley air hit us. All the layers of wool and jackets came off and we were in our swimming suits soaking in the summer.Mine being a gold bathing suit straight from the city of sin .
We went up the river and I took B+W film photos of the glacier and the river. We tied on to his mom dock where his brother and sister were merrily playing. We arrived at 4pm. Warning Gratuitous photos of me in a gold bikini:

It was a bit of travel time to be sure but then again we did take a lot stops to adventure. For some reason with the sceneray and the joy of being in the water it didn’t seem that long of ride at all.
I am unsure I could do the Tofino to Ucluelet part in a 14 ft boat that planes. The flying off the waves and bumping in to them just isn’t my style. I thing when my boat is ready and it flows with dips and rises of the ocean as oppose to plowing through I will be more seafaring.

The Sail Boat

So many of you know, I purchased a Sailboat.

( well it is a Ry and I collaboration).

It is 30 feet, two levels ( one level will be just for a queen bed), a bathroom, sink, metal keel, fiberglass hull and a single mast. This my first asset. My plan is to work on it with Ry for the up coming months on my days off and get it up to snuff.

Essentially it will be home. I have planned inside. All improvements and prices were discussed before the purchase and all parties have agreed on what the boat will be. So now is the count down.

I plan on updating this new chapter in my life extensively. Better photos of the ships exterior will be available shortly. Right now I have what I was working on last week, Power sanding the old paint. I bought primer so these up coming days off will be priming.

The next week we are going to fiberglass the hull as the person we bought it off hand built the second level but did not have time/ energy to fiberglass it. I have 5-10 gallons of resin and a roll matted fiberglass ready for the next few sunny days. As sunny weather is necessary for this improvement.

This sort of just happened. First it was suggestion from Gilly the pirate " hey you should buy my boat". Then I thought what if I bought this boat. Then I started conversing with Ryley about what it could be. Then I learnt moorage costs are significantly cheaper than rent. Then I slept in the sailboat and I think thats when I fell in love. Even when I wasn't on it I thought about the rocking of the water. Waking up on the water. And then it was my boat. Then I purchased it . Now I have a boat.

I am getting the papers this week. I am going to re-register the sailboat.
The name of the boat is going to be : Ave Maria. It came to me like a lighting bolt and so it shall be.

America and the Middle East

This whole "Imax propaganda" experience made me go back to a book called " The Modern Middle East: A History" by James L Gelvin.

It was a textbook for a modern middle east history course I took in second year. Let me a share an excerpt I found interesting and enlightening.

These charges represent the perception of America in the minds of many in the Middle East, even those who abhor Bin Laden and his tactics. George W. Bush claimed that so called Islamic extremists hate America because of its freedoms. Actually, many in the region hate what they perceive to be American arrogance and hypocrisy. In their view, America claimed benevolent intentions while it maintained sanctions on Iraq with devastating results; it dons the mantle of justice while it supports Israel's war against Palestinians; it sheds crocodile tears for human rights while it cozies up to every kin and tinhorn dictator, from Saudi Arabia to Pakistan, who will advance U.S interests; it takes pride in its repudiation of imperialism while it maintains troops in the region "just in case".

Arabia ( the Imax movie)

Today I went to the Imax, to watch what I thought was going to be sweeping wide landscape shots of sand formations.
I was wrong, so wrong.

"Arabia" should be titled "Why America doesn't want you to be prejudice against Saudi Arabia, you know its oil ally". There was even footage of first oil agreement between Roosevelt and Ibn Saud. Cause all americans loved Roosevelt and if Roosevelt liked someone so should you !

The film begins with mud huts in the desert, then the annoncer says this was Arabia in the 1800's but it has expanded greatly into the present age. Then the veil is lifted with grandiose aerial shots of saudi arbia's modern wealthy cityscapes. On display like a pretty pony in an all american horse show.
The premise is they are following a filmmaker who is from the region but went to school in the states and is returning. You see mecca and the annual pilgrimage. At some point they talk about the great arabic scholars of the past.

The annoying part about this propagandistic film is that it cant decide what it is about.
Is it about the history of Saudi Arabia ? Modernity versus traditional values in contemporary Saudi Arabian society ?
Or is it about camels and arbian horses? Or about the oppression of women in Saudi Arabia ?

Thats right they talked about women, sort of. They bring up that women are going to be accepted to a new university opening in Riyadh. They talk about how women have more college degrees than men on a whole. Then quickly they say oh, women have to dress modestly in these full body robes and they are not allowed to study abroad or leave the country without male consent. Next scene the announcer says " Women in Saudi Arabian culture have greater problems than their modest dress but this is a work in progress." Then they cut to the next scene about bedouin being the same as western cowboys.

Hey HELEN MIRREN THE IMAX ANNOUNCER, WHAT ARE THE ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS, WOMEN FACE OTHER THAN THEIR MODEST DRESS? WOULD YOU CARE TO EXPAND?

On top of everything there are nearly no shots of women during the film and even though they reference a famous female poet they never let her talk. She doesnt talk to the camera. No women are interviewed.

The movie ignores all other middle eastern cultures or countries .

They reference volcanoes in the desert but never show us one.

Ugh This reminds of sled dogs at the vic film fest. Why don't they just shut up and show us sweeping landscape shots ?

Lets face it the guy loves posters and a revolution gives you a Perfect Opportunity to make great posters.

I am currently in Love with the NightWatch/DayWatch posters.
No one in my class liked these movies. I thought for Russian B horror horror movies they fantastic.

I recommend Joshua's revolution to do something along these lines but with a lil' of his own flair of course.

A funny obssesion with a hat

Yes, she wears a brain damage-styled hat straight from a Bosch paintings. Her fiancé is desperately asking her to please, please take the ugly thing off. His insistence, of course, is part of his negative image. She is surrounded by caricatures of characters.

Well, the movie leaves a feeling of insult. Amélie had style, class, Paris, and Audrey Tautou. For such elegant a bouquet, I forgave its sins and embraced it (after all, most did) as a fairy tale, as a parabola, as a joyfully grotesque daydreaming.

As for this putrid dreck called Piter FM, I can only say had I been in the shoes of the fiancé, she would have eaten that hat.

OH man, "If I has been in the shoes of the finace, she would have eaten that HAT ! " Wow really.

The movie was bad. This lady's review on the whole is a little over the top because I think she has issues with the current state of affairs in Russia. But the homelessness bit is true. The movie is an insult. But her obsession with what I thought was a cute hat is just plain humourous.

Here is the hat that can evoke the wrath of forcing one to eat their own hat, Behold!

1. Become Russian because reading Dostoevsky is way more broody and dark than reading Atwood. Revolutionaries have to be inspired by reading though perhaps in your case the exception for film watching could be made.

2. Get a photo of you and your comrades ( because if you are Russian you can use the term comrades) lopping off a head of a statue. In your case probably one of Edison or Tesla ? The bigger the head the better. The grainier the photo the better. Be in it looking broody wearing some kind of trench, or army trench.

Lady at the Pharmasave

Just treated me like a leper.

I went in to get more first aid gauze in " disguise" : sunglasses, hoodie on.
Now, I have been wearing the same yoga pants for two days but I showered and changed shirts so it can't be because I smell.

She didn't even say hello and told me my change right away. Then when I went to hand her my $10 bill she told me not to hand it to her but to put on the counter. Then she pointed to the spot on the counter where she wanted it. So I did. She put my change on top of the bill on the counter and then started helping the next customer while I was still there.
I said " Could I have a bag please? "
She gave me one.

It was probably the worst feeling ever.
When you are sick it is wise to avoid the safeway
but for the LOVE OF GOD do not go into the Pharmasave, they are handing out persecution by the barrelfull.

My English Country Garden

Imagine me tending to my plants to this song.

There is nothing sexier than a man who knows his flowers names. Thought there be no creppy crawlies in my gardens. Also when he is naming the insects why does he says snakes? I mean snakes aren't insects Jimmie but you are pardoned since you asked for it in advanced.

The first two photo are of my thyme. The Thyme Kiera gave me and the new golden lemon thyme I bought recently. It is a natural deer detterent! Not that I have that problem in my living room. It will taste good on fish dishes.

Then here I have the two photos of my new dill plant that I am growing from a seed. It is spurting in the right hand corner. I planted it five days ago and it is taking off. It is dill mammoth and enjoyed a directed seeding which means it prefers to planted directly into its new garden bed so that it is never moved. It will also be delicious.

This my new Provence Lavender Herb plant. It will taste great in salads and desserts. The leaves are very aromatic and one day soon there will be beautiful purple flowers !

These are my baby seedlings that I have planted. The forest of lemon basil is doing really well. I waiting for two more leaves to grow before transplanting to its own pot. The other side is rosemary it is slowly coming up. The mistake I made when I planted seeds the first time was not soaking the seeds in water. Now that I have soaked the seeds in luke warm water for two days they germinate incredibly fast!

These are my inroom plants. Polka dot plant is hiding in the the back you may remeber her from other posts. Peppermint plant is the new addition to the room. In fore ground are the tulips my mom bought me to make me feel better. They are beautiful and make me happy in the morning. Both Polka and peppermint don't need full light so I decided having them in the planter box with the plants that demand full light is silly. They are with me in the par shade. Peppermint is also very aromatic and pleasant.
